Hello Capitol Heights Families,
I would like to introduce myself to some and re-introduce myself to others. As a child, I grew up in Vallejo, California, until my junior year of high school when I moved to Sacramento. Upon completion of high school, I did not immediately go to a 4-year University/college. At the time, I was faced with multiple circumstances that prevented me from going to college: a low socio-economic background, teen motherhood, and a mindset that did not know that I could attend college. So instead, I joined the military, hoping that it would help me to afford college. This served as an eye-opener to me, the inequities in education that we face in this country. I believe that education is a way to self-actualization, which allows you to be whoever you want to be. However, we are not all given the same access to opportunities, which is why I became an educator to disrupt and dismantle systems of oppression. To give voice to my students and their families, as I understand that my seat at the table matters. Especially when it comes to shaping opportunities for scholars who may face similar challenges to me.
I came to Capitol Heights Academy (CHA) in 2018. Before my time at CHA, I worked as a substitute and completed a one-year teacher residency with Aspire. I have also had experiences as a co-owner/operator of an in-home daycare, teaching in the after-school program with Sacramento Unified, and as a Paraeducator with Sacramento County Office of Education. I completed a dual credential and Master’s program in Education for Instruction and Curriculum at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, traveling, shopping, and going to concerts.
As I embark on this new journey of serving as your Assistant Principal, I must say that I am truly honored and very grateful. Throughout my time at Capitol Heights, I have been blessed to witness the passion for advocacy and support as well as the connection of our community. Together, we have celebrated many victories of academic, personal, and professional growth. We have overcome situations that seemed to be impossible feats, such as the times of uncertainty through the changes of school administration, the pandemic, and social unrest, but united, we have pushed through it all. It is my goal to continue strengthening our bonds by creating authentic connections as well as continuing to build a positive school culture, a place where we all feel a sense of belonging! As such, I have so much that I am looking forward to in my role as DOS, and knowing that collaboration will be an integral part, please know that my door is always open.
CHA PROUD!
