Matt Cowan

Assistant Principal of Student Services

Bio

A native Memphian, Mr. Cowan began his teaching career in 2013 by joining the Memphis Teacher Residency program. Mr. Cowan was placed at Aspire Hanley Elementary in Ms. Chestnutt’s 3rd grade class. Once the program ended, Mr. Cowan was hired to teach 6th grade Humanities at Aspire Hanley Middle. During the 2014-2015 school year Mr. Cowan’s scholars saw tremendous amount of growth on the Reading TCAP which resulted in Mr. Cowan receiving a TVAAS rating of a level 5, the highest rating a teacher could receive. During the 2015-2016 school year, he returned to 6th grade where 70% of his scholars met or exceeded their MAP goals. He decided to make the jump to 8th Grade Humanities during the 2016-2017 school year. As a result, 80% of his scholars met or exceeded their goal on the MAP assessment.

Throughout Mr. Cowan’s time with Aspire he has held several teacher leader roles. He has been the Equity Driver, Teacher Effectiveness Driver, Athletic Director, 8th Grade Culture Lead, and Working Group lead. In these role, he has developed his leadership skills in both instruction and school culture. Mr. Cowan is excited to serve Aspire Hanley Middle in this new role.

Mr. Cowan is a proud graduate of the University of Memphis where he majored in Business Administration Management. Then, he received a Masters of Urban Education from Union University. In his free time, Mr. Cowan enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter, playing basketball, watching his favorite shows, and buying shoes.
